Set Up an iPad for TopsCheck-In

The TopsCheck-In for iPad app enables you to use an iPad as a touch screen for patient check-in!


To use the topsCheck-In for iPad app, you must have the following:

  1. Newest model possible. iOS 12 or newer is required.
  2. A WiFi network in your office.
  3. Tops Ortho version 8.0.3 or later.

How to set up the iPad Check-In app:

  1. Verify WiFi connectivity:
    1. On your iPad, open the Settings app and tap WiFi.
    2. Connect the iPad to the same wireless network as the Tops Ortho workstation you will use for pairing.
    3. Close the Settings app and check the WiFi symbol on the top of your device to ensure you’re connected.

2. Download the app:

    1. From your iPad, open the App Store.
    2. Search for Cogent Design.
    3. Select the topsCheck-In for iPad app and tap Install.

  1. Go to a Tops Ortho workstation:
    1. Go to Tops Ortho > Practice Setup > topsCheck-In > iPads
    2. Click the Show iPad Password button. For verification purposes, you will be required to enter your Tops Ortho password.
    3. The TopsCheck-In iPad Password will be displayed.
    4. Enter the password into the TopsCheck-In for iPad app.


  1. Find your Tops server:
    1. To pair the device you must establish the connection to the Tops server. From your iPad, tap to open the TopsCheck-In app.
    2. If you are in the same physical location and local network as the Tops server, the Tops server will be displayed on the iPad. Simply tap to select your Tops server.
    3. If you are at a satellite location OR you are a Lightning Cloud office, you will select Enter IP Address Manually and enter your remote IP.
    4. Enter your TopsCheck-In password (from the previous step) and tap Save at the upper right of the screen.


  1. Pair the iPad and your Tops server:
    1. The TopsCheck-In for iPad app will connect to your Tops server then await authorization.
    2. On your Tops Ortho workstation, look again at the TopsCheck-In setup panel.
    3. In the iPad Settings list, select the name of your iPad.
    4. From the Selected iPad Settings box, check the Active checkbox and select the location in which the iPad will be used.
    5. Your iPad will pair with the Tops server. That’s it! It just works!
