Tops Ortho Workstation Installer

Follow the directions below to set up your new Mac workstation and install Tops Ortho on your workstation.

User Account:

Verify that you are logged into a Standard user account. If you are unsure which account is Standard, perform the following steps:

  1. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences/Settings > Users & Groups. The account types will be labeled.
  2. To see which account you are logged into, go to the Apple Menu again.
  3. The last item in the menu will say Log Out (name of the account). This will show you which user account you are currently logged into.
  4. If you are not logged into the Standard user account, log out and log back in under the Standard user account.

Before you complete the next step, please talk with your practice tech. He/She will let you know if it is safe to perform available updates on your workstation.

Apple software:

  1. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences/Settings.., and search for software updates.
  2. Install available updates. NOTE: Our developers have not yet given the go-ahead to upgrade to macOS 14.X (Sonoma.) Please do not upgrade any higher than macOS 13.X (Ventura.)
  3. Repeat the update process until you receive this message, "There are no more software updates available for this machine.”

Energy Saver Preferences:

When you set up your Tops workstation, it’s important to make sure that the energy saving options are configured properly. If you let your workstation go to sleep, you’ll lose your connection to the Tops system.

  1. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences/Settings
  2. Select the Energy Saver icon under the Hardware section.
  3. Drag the Computer Sleep slider to Never.
  4. Drag Display sleep slider to 30 minutes.
  5. Uncheck Put the hard disk to sleep when possible.
  6. Check Wake for network access.
  7. Uncheck Allow power button to put the computer to sleep.
  8. Check Start up automatically after a power failure.
  9. Set the preferences on ALL workstations in this manner.

You will need three things before you begin the installation:

  1. The Tops Ortho Workstation Installer link. See below.
  2. The Tops Ortho Practice Fingerprint.
  3. The workstation's admin password. This admin password is the password you gave your computer when you first set it up. This is not related to the passwords used for Tops Ortho, nor is it related to the Practice Fingerprint.

Install Tops in the Home Folder:

  1. Click to open the Downloads folder.
  2. Double-click the Tops Workstation Installer to run the installer.
  3. From your desktop, double-click the Tops installer icon.
  4. If the installer is not opening when you click on it, try using a different browser. For example, if you are using Chrome, switch to Safari.

Launch the Tops Ortho application:

  1. From the Applications folder that appears on your desktop, double-click the Tops Ortho application to launch.
  2. A warning window will appear that Tops Ortho is an application downloaded from the internet; select Open.
  3. Tops Ortho will launch. Log in, and Tops will update to the current version.
  4. After the update is complete, log in again and enter the Practice Fingerprint.
  5. After Tops Ortho launches, navigate to the dock and right-click the Tops Ortho icon.
  6. From the Tops Ortho pop-up menu, select Options and Keep in Dock.
  7. Finally, drag the Tops_installer.dmg (from the Downloads folder) and Tops Installer (from the desktop) to the trash.
  8. Empty the trash.

That’s it! You’ve installed Tops Ortho!
