What is a macOS upgrade?

What is a macOS update?

A macOS update, also known as a security update, is an update offered within the existing macOS on your workstation. For example, if your workstation is running macOS Ventura 13.6.9, you will be prompted to install the security update to macOS Ventura 13.7.2.

Are security updates necessary?

Yes! Cybercriminals are constantly looking for vulnerabilities in programs. If they find cracks in security, they use them to gain access to your device. With this access, they can find ways to track your keyboard activity, steal patient information, or install ransomware.

When developers find vulnerabilities in a program, they fix them in security updates. It's important to install the security updates as soon as they become available. The longer you wait to install them, the longer your system could be at risk.

How do I find and run software updates and upgrades?

  1. Go to Apple Menu > System Settings (or System Preferences).
  2. Click on the search bar on the top left and type "software."
  3. You will see the result Software Update: Check for Software updates. Click on this result.

  1. A window will open displaying available updates and upgrades. Note: if an upgrade is offered, remember that we do not recommend running it until you speak with Team Tops!
  2. Click on More Info...

  1. A window will open displaying the available updates. Remove the checkmark from any updates you do not wish to run on your workstation. Since a restart is required and updates may take a few hours, choose a good time to run the update.
  2. Click Install Now.
