CDT Codes - Treatment Phase and Classification Combinations
Tops determines the orthodontic case CDT code used on an insurance claim based on the combination of the patient’s Treatment Phase and Dental Classification (Dentition).
Use the information below to identify which CDT code Tops will produce for each combination.

The following table shows the orthodontic CDT code produced by Tops based on the patient’s Dental Classification and Treatment Phase.

*D8050 and D8060 are no longer accepted for Interceptive Treatment as of January 1, 2022. See Phase I Treatment below for information about how Tops handles these patients when filing insurance claims.
Phase 1 Treatment
As of January 1, 2022, CDT codes D8050 and D8060 are no longer accepted for Interceptive Treatment. Phase I patients should instead be submitted using the applicable Limited Treatment CDT code, D8010 or D8020.
We understand that practices may still want to identify and track Phase I patients separately from patients receiving other types of Limited treatment. Tops allows you to continue assigning Interceptive Treatment as the patient’s Treatment Phase while automatically producing the appropriate Limited Treatment CDT code on the insurance claim.
For Phase I patients:
- From the Clinical tab of the patient’s chart, select Interceptive Treatment as the Treatment Phase.
- Select the appropriate Dental Classification:
- Primary
- Transitional
When an insurance claim is created, Tops automatically substitutes the appropriate CDT code:
| Dental Classification | Treatment Phase | CDT Code Produced on Claim |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | Interceptive Treatment | D8010 |
| Transitional | Interceptive Treatment | D8020 |
This allows you to continue tracking the patient’s Treatment Phase as Interceptive Treatment in Tops without submitting the discontinued interceptive treatment codes on the claim.
