Tops Server Dos and Don'ts

The Tops Ortho server manages your practice information. It is the heart of your practice. We can properly maintain your server as long as you follow these simple rules. Deviating from the rules may void your service agreement.


Tops Ortho Server Dos

  • DO establish a relationship with a local networking professional.
    • Working with a local, qualified professional can simplify your initial network setup. If the need arises, the network professional will know your network and can assist you with any troubleshooting.
  • DO leave your server on 24/7.
    • The Tops Server software does maintenance daily. Tops software updates will be performed after hours and on weekends.
  • DO back up every day.
    • You will utilize two external drives, which will be rotated daily. 
  • DO place a UPS power backup on your server.
    • If there is a power outage, this will allow for proper shutdown of the Tops server.
  • DO contact our Support Team if your network configuration changes.
    • Network changes can affect your ability to connect to the Tops server.

Tops Ortho Server Don'ts

  • DON'T change configuration.
    • Don't change the settings of your router or Tops server once they are properly configured.
  • DON'T copy your server hard drive to another machine.
    • Contact support if you need to replace your Tops server.
  • DON'T install software on the Tops server.
    • Running other software is a risk to your entire system.
    • Don't run LogMeIn or any remote access software.
    • Don't run Time Clock Software.
    • Don't use it for scanning.
    • Don't email or browse the internet.
    • Don't stream music or movies.
    • Don’t host web or mail service.
    • Don't install antivirus software.
  • DON'T partition the hard drive.
    • Don't partition the hard drive or move the home directories of your server.
  • DON'T give your Tops server a public IP address.
    • The Tops server IP address should not begin with anything other than 10.x.x.x or192.x.x.x.
  • DON'T use file sharing.
    • If you need a repository for sharing files between workstations, for example, X-ray files, configure one of your workstations for file sharing. Be sure to back up that workstation, as it is separate from the Tops backup.
  • DON'T install Mac OS X Server.
    • Mac OS X server is a special version of Mac OS X for companies that are setting up web servers or that need to share files between more than ten workstations.
  • DON'T set up a VPN.
    • Tops Ortho is designed to be used from remote locations without a VPN. All data handled by Tops uses Blowfish encryption for maximum security. A VPN adds complexity to your network configuration and will diminish performance.
  • DON'T use your server for printer sharing.
    • Printer sharing should only be configured on a Tops workstation, not on the Tops server.
  • DON'T turn on Screen Sharing.
    • Screen Sharing will block our ability to install and service the Tops server.
  • DON'T install Apple Remote Desktop server software.
    • Apple Remote Desktop will cause the Tops server software to fail.
